Not many construction projects take you into a building with 550 years of history behind it.
CGA has started on site at 11-13 Dowgate Hill in the City of London, the home of The Dyers' Company, one of London's ancient livery companies. Grade II* listed, it reflects not just age but genuine architectural and historical significance.
The brief is to bring modern functionality without compromising what the building is. Structural alterations, floor strengthening, a new staircase and new office and storage accommodation, all within a building that continues to serve its members and guests.
The Dyers' Company is worth understanding. Founded over five centuries ago, it remains active today, with a livery hall used regularly for formal dinners, events and the civic life these institutions have always sustained.
The consultant team is Feilden+Mawson as architect, Alan Baxter Partnership on structural engineering and Equals Consulting on M&E. Close collaboration is essential on a project of this kind.
We are six months in. More to follow.
