Clive Graham Associates (CGA) is proud to announce that we have been selected by Haringey Council to undertake the refurbishment and internal improvement of the historic Bruce Castle Museum. This project, valued at £860,000, represents a significant step in preserving and enhancing one of Tottenham's most cherished landmarks.
Historical Significance of Bruce Castle
Bruce Castle is a Grade I listed building dating back to the 16th century, nestled within eight hectares of parkland on Lordship Lane, Tottenham. Acquired by the local authority in 1892, the castle has been home to the local history collections since 1906, making it a cornerstone of the community's cultural heritage.
Historical Restoration Project Overview
Scheduled to start at the end of May, the 42-week project will focus on several critical areas to ensure the museum not only maintains its historic integrity but also improves its facilities for staff and visitors alike. This includes:
- Structural Repairs: Implementing temporary structural propping and support, particularly in the southeast corner of the East Wing, to strengthen the first and second floors.
- Creation of New Gallery: Transforming the first-floor office suite into a new gallery space, which will allow for an enhanced visitor experience.
- Fire Safety and Building Protection: Upgrading the fire detection system and improving compartmentation to better protect staff, the public, and the museum's valuable collections.
- Interior Improvements: The project will also include extensive internal improvement works such as ceiling repairs or replacements, refurbishment of windows, updates to electrical cabling and distribution, lighting upgrades, and decorative plasterwork.
Historical Restoration Requires Collaboration
CGA will be collaborating with Rodney Melville + Partners, the appointed architects, and Playle & Partners, the quantity surveyors, to deliver these improvements. This partnership underscores our commitment to excellence and our ability to work alongside esteemed experts to achieve outstanding results.
Funding and Support
The refurbishment has been made possible through the Museum Estate and Development Funding (MEND) secured by Haringey Council and Historic England. This funding is crucial in ensuring that the necessary improvements can be made without compromising the building's historical elements.
Beginning Our Relationship with Haringey
The refurbishment of Bruce Castle Museum is a project that promises to enhance one of Haringey's most historic sites, ensuring its viability and accessibility for future generations. It is our first project for Haringey which is very exciting for us. It is a chance for us to prove our commitment to preserving historic buildings and places while enhancing community assets.
Stay tuned for updates as we progress with the refurbishment, aiming for completion in Spring 2025. At CGA, we are committed to delivering projects that respect heritage while incorporating modern standards of safety and accessibility.
