Clive Graham Associates is currently carrying out the refurbishment of St Augustine’s Church located in Hammersmith. The church interior is being redecorated and new services will be implemented into the infrastructure. Substantial protection works were carried-out before any demolition works began. All items that needed adequate protection such as the existing paintings, balustrade and Terrazzo stone were boxed in plywood.
The existing beams, timber trusses and ceilings had a dark varnish that was stripped down to the bare wood and the finish will be with an environmentally friendly paint. We have carefully removed the existing finishes by setting up scaffold and creating a platform encased in a zip wall. The beams and ceiling is then soda-blasted to expose the bare wood, a process in which sodium bicarbonate is applied against a surface using compressed air. We ensured there were adequate protection to the existing fixed joinery items and ceiling during sanding works.
The existing carpet around the altar will be removed where a new raised step is constructed New Portuguese limestone will be laid over the existing stone and some existing marble from the North Transept will be cut to size to fit into a new inlay feature. The original Terrazzo stone in the vestibule, north and south transept will be restored. The altar will also be completed with an original Augustinian mosaic.
The internal windows will be repaired and re-decoration to the internal doors, frames and windows will be carried out. New confession box and panelling to the entrance will be completed.
In time, a new fixed altar, tabernacle, lectern (Ambo) and a Baptismal Font will be added in addition to a new Reconciliation room. New lighting, sound and energy efficient heating will be implemented to the church.
